What Makes A Professional Drummer.

The ability to play drums is something that most of us can learn with enough time and effort but to be classified as a truly talented and gifted drummer you have to possess several other skills and natural abilities. First off the primary job of any drummer is to keep as perfect time as possible in every song under all situations. This alone is will filter out 80% of drummers from this list. A perfect meter (time) is something that only the finest and most naturally skilled drummers possess. If you can keep perfect or close to perfect time without a click track you are something special. At the end of the day the primary job of a drummer in any band is to keep the time and move the music. Next is the ability to play for the song and not for yourself. Most drummers have a difficult time not overplaying in certain situations. Unless you’re playing Dream Theater or Rush your job is to move the music, provide the groove and of course keep the tempo consistent.

Making your fills and grooves tasteful and appropriate for the song is extremely important. Overplaying can result in a sloppy and overly busy sounding performance. A songs feel and impact on the audience can be greatly influenced by tastfulness of the drummers goove and feel and appropriatness of his or her fills. Next would the ability of the drummer to understand the music they are playing. The ability to read and write music is very important to a drummers overall understanding a how songs are phrased and structured. Your marketability will also increase if you have the ability to read music. Many gigs require the ability to read and possibly write music such as variety bands, cruise ship bands, theater, etc. Lastly has to do with the drummer’s personality. How well does he work with get along with his peers and band mates? The finest drummers are humble and give praise to their fellow musicians and well as they receive it.

Egos can severely hurt some drummer’s ability to work effectively within a band. Once you’ve created a reputation being cocky and egoistic it may be difficult to find consistent work as a drummer so it’s important to be professional and courteous to all of your band mates and music associates at all times. When you put together these elements of natural talent, time keeping skills, groove and feel, playing for the song, not show boating, music education and personality you’ve got a great drummer who can play any type of music very well and work effectively with any other musician. The best professional drummers out there today poses these traits and for any drummer looking to move to the next level in their career these are important things to remember.

‘Idol’ finalist Pia Toscano hard at work with Rodney Jerkins on debut album

Anthony Jones – Celebrity News Service Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Entertainment) – While Pia Toscano jokingly wore a “Most Shocking” sash on the “American Idol” finale in reference to her ninth place elimination, fans of the singer shouldn’t be shocked to hear that she’s hard at work on her new album and has already recorded a few songs.

Toscano is hard at work with Rodney “Darkchild”Jerkins, who helped produced some of the “Idol” studio tracks on sale on iTunes. Jerkins has been in the studio with Toscano as recently as last weekend working on a “big diva” record.

“It’s a big, diva-sounding record,” Jerkins told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s what I think I do best – that big Whitney, Mariah, Celine vibe. We’ve having fun with that.”

Jerkins knows all about divas. He’s worked with everyone from Whitney Houston to Beyonce, Janet Jackson, and Lady Gaga, and scored #1 hits with Brandy, Monica, and current “Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez.

But while he’s known for his pop and R&B sounds, Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine has already commissioned him to write songs for the country-leaning finalists, winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina.

“This was training for us producers,” Jerkins said about his experience on “Idol.” “I wrote five country songs last week. It’s transformed not just the contestants but even the producer.”

While Toscano, McCreery and Alaina prepare to head out on the “American Idols Live” tour, Jerkins will be hard at work on tracks for their debut albums.

“These kids have crazy schedules so what’s going to happen is while they’re on the road traveling, they’ll have to stop in certain cities and record, which might mean us traveling and meeting them to record.”

Just like every year, the albums are expected to be ready for release in time for the holiday shopping season.

Palestinian art gets a home of its own

The Media Line Staff

Umm Al-Fahm, Israel Arieh O’Sullivan – High up on the hillside, occupying the three top floors of a nondescript building, is the Umm Al-Fahm Art Gallery. Run by artist Said Abu Shakra, the gallery opened 15 years ago to bring culture to the town of mostly farmers and construction workers.

“It’s been a revolution here,” Abu Shakra says, adding it is the only art museum in any Arab town in Israel. “We have turned Umm Al-Fahm into the cultural center for all Israeli Arabs, and Palestinian artists, too.”

The gallery has drawn international acclaim and over 40,000 visitors last year, about half of them Israeli Jews. But Abu Shakra’s main goal is to boost art among Israel’s Arab minority, a difficult challenge when most people are mainly concerned with feeding and clothing their families.

A former police officer, Said Abu Shakra comes from a family of artists. He knows an art gallery in this working class town would have to transform the mentality of his fellow residents who shunned art.

“When we started this, people asked me ‘why do we need an art gallery here?’ They would have preferred an industrial zone with jobs than an art gallery. But I said we had to thrive not just physically, but also spiritually,” Abu Shakra says.

About 20 percent of Israeli citizens are Arabs. Umm Al-Fahm is the economic, social and religious center of the area known as the “triangle” of Arab towns around the Wadi Ara valley. Its past includes violent clashes with Israeli security forces.

Israelis and the international community have embraced the gallery and the concept of Palestinian art. His gallery has hosted a Yoko Ono show and annual symposiums, and has helped put Palestinian artists on the map. But that really isn’t the idea driving the museum.

“One of our biggest enemies is the boorishness — you don’t know about something so you become against it,” says Abu Shakra, who recalls the time a neighbor came to the opening with Yoko Ono, but was too embarrassed at the way he was dressed to enter.

“If they can’t look us in the eye, then we have to stoop even lower to be at their level,” Abu Shakra says. “We’ll get down on our knees, if we must, because we need to reach these people. Because without them, we don’t have any right to exist.”

Abu Shakra says the gallery has offered courses and art classes, even ballet lessons, that have succeeded in bringing in locals. “It’s hard work, you tell someone ‘Here, it’s honey, eat it.’ They didn’t believe its honey.”

Ahmad Canaan, one of a growing number of Israeli Arabs who has been able to make a living as an artist, appreciates the impact the Umm Al-Fahm gallery has played.

“Things are changing. Twenty years ago we didn’t have any galleries. We show our art sometimes in community centers, but in the last 15 years we have a lot of changes like the gallery in Umm al-Fahm,” says Canaan.

Palestinian art has been making inroads thanks also to the Jaffa Salon for Palestinian Art in Tel Aviv where Arab artists from the Galilee, West Bank and Gaza can sell their work.

Palestinian art tends to be melancholic and often rooted in symbolism, like the olive tree. Some are explosive while others have political subtext, not always overtly expressed.

“If you see this woman in the field, an Arab woman with an embroidered dress, it could also be political, yes. But if you see the paintings of Karim Abu Shakra, you see these purple rockets. It looks nice, but he has something to say about the war on Gaza,” Canaan says. “We know our situation here inside Israel and it’s not easy. But we have a lot to say in our way. So we use art to tell our stories and our history and our also difficulties.”

Yair Rothman, co-owner of Jaffa Salon, opened the gallery as a temporary endeavor last year but kept it open due to demand. He says it was helping change the way Israelis saw Palestinians.

“Most of the people are kind of shocked, because in their imagination Palestinian people, or Arab people, are throwing stones, throwing bottles and making trouble. They didn’t realize how sensitive these people can be and how their artwork can represent their families, olive trees and things they love,” Rothman says.

Rothman says the rising interest in Palestinian art was also due to its relatively low price, which made it a good investment. But he dismissed the idea that it was a passing fad.

“It is kind of a fashion now to have any Arab artist in your house or maybe in your collection but after all this fades away you still have the art and the art is good. I don’t see it as a fad,” Rothman says.

Back in Umm Al-Fahm, Abu Shakra’s shares his dream to build a huge museum to house Palestinian contemporary art, anchored in the photo collection and the town archives.

“We knew the cultural situation in Umm Al-Fahm and most of the Arab sector was close to zero. There’s been no investment, not by the state of Israel or by us. But I’m not blaming anyone. I’m here to build,” Abu Shakra says.

Your Home Office: 9 Simple Ideas to Create A Workspace That Inspires You

How would you describe your home office? Is it a pleasant place that welcomes you and helps you work more efficiently everyday? Or, is it cluttered, dark and just a place you sit to get work done?

Imagine starting each morning in a workspace that is calm, clean and gives you the feeling that all is well and abundance is everywhere. Any workspace can be transformed into a comfortable, motivating place to grow your business. It takes a little work, but with a few changes, you can make the commitment to love your life and love your work.

Try these 9 simple ideas to enhance your workspace and inspire your creativity:

1. Clean your workspace. A cluttered room blocks creativity and slows your energy. Spend a day cleaning and throwing away no longer needed items. Be simple. You’ll feel happier.

2. Move your desk in front of the window. Why not give yourself the opportunity to see blue sky, leaves blowing in the wind, fluffy clouds while you type away at your laptop? Open the window for fresh air.

3. Place some plants on your windowsill or on a table near the window. Plants clear the air and give us the gift of fresh oxygen. Good for your brain! Find plants like a Lucky Bamboo or Money Tree at your local supermarket or home store.

4. Paint your work area walls. This will require a little more work but the payoff is well worth it. Choose a color that is soothing and peaceful like a dusty blue. It will give you the feel of blue sky and act as a calming background to all your paperwork and electronics.

5. Paint old furniture and file cabinets black or gray. This will create a neutral background for your work. The less distractions as you work, the easier you can complete tasks. I found two file cabinets in a “scratch and dent” sale and painted them semi-gloss enamel black along with two black bookshelves. They look clean and fresh against the soft blue walls.

6. Surround yourself with inspirational words. Either Google or use the new search engine, Bing, to find motivational quotes. Choose a few, type them up with fonts that please you and print them. Cut them out and place on your bulletin board or in front of your workspace.

7. Create a Vision Board. You know what this is. Take one of your bulletin boards or a 24 x 36 cardboard or foam board and fill it with images that motivate you. Find pictures of money, beautiful abundant nature, things that you would like to have such as a car, or new home. Just search on Bing.com for “money images” and you’ll be surprised how many pictures come up. Just click and print. Put a couple of your inspirational quotes on the board and a picture of you, too. You’re all set. Just glancing at it once in a while will lift your energy.

8. Background sounds. Some people find music a distraction, while others need it to block out noise or keep their brain busy while doing certain tasks. Find the perfect music to keep you focused, either soft nature sounds, classical, or alpha waves that can help you tap into your creativity. Whatever keeps you focused.

9. Favorite objects. Choose only a few. Everyone’s got some little things around that bring a smile or spark a memory. Choose three or four items that make you feel happy. A few pictures of happy moments and people you love will remind you why you are working. Remember, less is more. So, organize these items on a shelf or on your desk without taking up too much space.

In a visually well-organized home office, you can work in peace and feel energetic and happy as you work. You’ll think more clearly and get a lot more work accomplished. Create a workspace that inspires the best in you.

Trends of The Future on Show at The RCA

Show Two represents one of the few instances where Londoners can view and experience the contemporary design and communications work of next-generation practitioners.

It also acts as an important platform for postgraduate students to test their ideas before embarking on a professional career.

According to wallpaper.com, this year’s innovative designs include musical crockery produced by Alex Hulme, bicycle storage solutions from Dominic Hargreaves and a clothes horse for the modern era from Therese Glimskar.

A table designed to be easily dismantled by Lewis Taylor and a table shade from Olivia Decaris which can be lowered and raised to create an indoor/outdoor effect are two of the other highlights of the exhibition, which runs until July 5th.

In his introductory speech, Sir Christopher noted that interior design had assumed even greater importance in the wake of the recession.

He said that today’s students “have a particularly important role to play in difficult times – as Franklin D Roosevelt realised when he launched the Works Progress Administration, part of the New Deal, in mid-1930s America”.

Guitar Chords Learn To Play – Fast Tips To Improve Your Chord Transitions

There are a lot of songs out there for the guitar and most of them involve two chords or more to play. However, the difficult aspect of playing chords isn’t forming them, but transitioning between them.

Once you master the technique of transitioning smoothly between two chords, you can really present yourself as a professional when you play any guitar tunes. Here are a few tips to improve your chord transitions when you play the guitar.

1. Know the chords before you play them.

When you learn guitar chords to play, your fingers know exactly where they need to be when the time comes to play. If your fingers hesitate before they make it to the next chord, work on solidifying those chords into the memory of your fingers so that you can form them with your eyes closed.

2. Work through the progressions slowly.

We all know that you’re going to need to play fast eventually, but now is not the time when you’re developing smooth chord transitions. Practice at a tempo that allows you to play a progression perfectly before you decide to increase the speed.

3. Plan the path of your fingers.

Sometimes a couple chords might have your fingers tripping over each other on their way to the next chord formation. Plan where you’re going to place your fingers next and how they’re going to get there in order to avoid your fingers getting tangled up in the process.

4. Go between two chords over and over again.

A little monotony isn’t a bad thing when you have a difficult set of chords to get through and you might need to bite the bullet and hash it out. When two chords can’t seem to transition, play between those chords over and over again to ingrain them into your muscle memory.

5. Place your fingers on the frets simultaneously.

Learning chords to play can get you into a habit of placing your fingers on the frets one at a time, but you’ll be slowing down your technique. When you form a chord, practice placing all of your fingers on the strings at the same time.

This will shorten the amount of time you need to play each chord and increase your playing speed overall.

6. Strum through the transitions.

There are going to be subtle hesitations between each chord when you first begin, but you need to continue to strum through the pauses. If a pause is only for half a second, playing through it gives a more fluent feel to the progression.

Whether you like it or not, you’re going to need to learn to play guitar chords because they’re everywhere. Focus on creating very smooth transitions and fluent formations and your audience will start to recognize you as a professional.

Music Teaching Tips That Work

Most of us music teachers aim to offer the best services to our students and let them learn their chosen instruments in the most efficient manner. Having a good teaching strategy will not only give your students fun learning experience but it will also earn you respect in the field. Thus, I have listed some music teaching tips that will enable you to teach your students effectively.

* Target both your students’ minds and bodies – Especially if your students are still young, you must understand that they may need a combination of physical and mental exercises and activities in learning. Aside from the fun it may bring to them, the possibility of understanding and recalling the lesson you are teaching may also increase.

* Learn how to energize students during boring moments – there will always be some instances wherein you have to discuss some important topics that are somewhat uninteresting to your students. These may lead to an inattentive class or worse, a sleeping class. Being observant and flexible is important to bring back a lively discussion. Why not ask them to do some stretching or tell some old jokes. Detaching fro the lesson plan for some minutes is better that to teach a daydreaming class.

* Provide your students with the best facilities – this is not one of my music teaching tips but rather it is your key to attract more clients and students. If your students learn and practice their instruments comfortably, you may not need to explain some lessons further. Your students may have greater determination and urge to learn any lesson.

* Give commendations to well-doers – giving applause for those who excel and have positive attitudes in the class will even boost their moral. This might as well motivate all the others to exert their efforts in learning their instrument and join those who have earned commendations.

* Treat slow-learners and wacky students positively – a class includes students with a variety of learning capacities and attitudes. Slow-learners and problem students must not be treated differently. Always remember that music teaching does not only involve explaining music lessons but instilling positive personality to each of your students.

These music teaching tips may vary depending on the circumstances. Private music teachers with fewer students may have an easier time handling their students. But then again, for those who may find these tips effective, please do your part and let other music teachers know about it
