Italian Cinema Legend Monicelli Dies After Suicide Attempt

AHN News Staff

Rome, Italy (AHN) – Post-war Italian cinema legend Mario Monicelli has died after jumping out of a hospital window in Rome.

The 95-year-old director has been described as the “father of Italian comedy,” directing evergreen films such as Amici Mei (My Dear Friends) and I Soliti Ignoti (Persons Unknown). Monicelli has been honored with several awards and nominated for Oscars four times.

He started his career as a director in 1949 and won the Golden Lion for his film The Great War at the Venice Film Festival in 1959.

He was reportedly diagnosed with prostate cancer and was receiving treatment at Rome’s San Giovanni Hospital, where he was admitted just a few days ago.

Monicelli also launched the careers of Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale and Vittorio Gassman in 1958. In the U.S., the film, titled Big Deal on Madonna Street, became a huge hit.

In his 60-year career, he directed 70 films and mainly touched stories about common men who faced extraordinary circumstances.

One of his best-known works is A Very Little Man, a film released in 1977 about a man forced to take justice in his hands after his son’s death in a robbery.

President Giorgio Napolitano, in a tribute, said millions of Italians would remember Monicelli for several years for the way he moved them, how he made them laugh and reflect.

Anne Lu – Celebrity News Service Contributor

Canberra, Australia (CNS) – “Crocodile Dundee” star Paul Hogan has been cleared of tax evasion Tuesday after five years of being a suspect in the investigation. The Australian Crime Commission decided to drop the case because there are “insufficient prospects of securing convictions.”

The ACC said in a statement, “This decision has been made following a careful process, including obtaining high-level legal advice on some issues.”

Anne Lu – AHN Entertainment Contributor

Bangkok, Thailand (AHN) – The cast and crew of “The Hangover 2″ may have kicked out Mel Gibson from their film, but they’ve added another star. Former President Bill Clinton was spotted in Thailand to film a cameo spot with the guys.

Clinton will be playing himself in the comedy sequel. A source close to the ex-U.S. leader told People magazine that he shot his brief appearance on Saturday in the capital Bangkok, where he also delivered a speech on clean energy for a separate engagement.

TMZ sources said the production added security for Clinton’s protection.

The Todd Phillips-directed “The Hangover 2,” the sequel to the 2009 hit comedy, will star Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, and Zach Galifianakis. It is slated for a May 2011 release.

Patriotic Music: -Some Surprising Secrets about Those Flag-Waving Sounds

There are some surprising facts behind all of this glorious music.

So, fire up the barbecue grill, look up at the fireworks, and strike up the band as we reveal the secrets behind the most influential nationalistic musical moments of all time.

“Star Spangled Banner,” Francis Scott Key, 1814.
Schoolchildren in America all learn how Key watched the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and so admired the courage of the beleaguered American forces that he wrote four stanzas of “The Star Spangled Banner” (only the first is usually performed). Key based the melody on an English drinking song called “To Anacreon in Heaven.” The song has only been the national anthem since 1931, and there was a strong movement to replace it with one of the other songs on this list.

“America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee),” Samuel F. Smith, 1832.
The music was composed in the 1700s, sometimes attributed to Henry Cary. First popular in Great Britain as “God Save the King (Queen),” the song became bi-continental in 1832. Modern audiences have been greatly moved by the R&B version by Ray Charles, a truly wonderful blending of emotion with what musicians call “the groove.”

“Rally ‘Round the Flag,” George F. Root, 1862.
Written for the Union army and its supporters during the Civil War, the song was hugely popular in the North. This didn’t prevent Confederate troops from writing their own lyrics and singing the song throughout the South.

“When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” Louis Lambert, c. 1863.
Lambert was a pseudonym for Union Army Bandmaster Patrick S. Gilmore. His lyrics, set to an old Irish folk song, were popular through the whole Reconstruction Era (1865-1896). It appears in an extended instrumental version on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick’s film “Dr. Strangelove.”

“Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Julia W. Howe, 1861.
Howe is another lyricist who succeeded by utilizing a pre-existing piece of music, in this case a camp meeting tune of the 19th century (which also became “John Brown’s Body”). The profound power of the words combined with the compelling melody cannot be denied, and it was sung at the funerals of Winston Churchill, Robert Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan.

“Overture: 1812,” Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1880.
Patriotic music doesn’t always revolve around the July 4th celebration, or even refer to the USA. Tchaikovsky got Russian hearts a-pounding with his “1812 Overture in E Flat Major Op. 49,” written to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his country’s victory battle during the Napoleonic Wars.

“Semper Fidelis,” John Philip Sousa, 1889.
Popular ever since it was first performed, the effective and spirited tune takes its name from the U.S. Marine Corps motto meaning “always faithful” and is dedicated to the Marines.

“America the Beautiful,” Katharine Lee Bates, 1895, 1904, 1913.
Originally a poem that Bates twice revised after its first publication in 1885, “America the Beautiful” was sung to several different melodies. The song associated with it today is “Materna,” composed by Samuel A. Ward in 1882, but it was also often performed to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne.”

“Stars and Stripes Forever,” John Philip Sousa, 1896.
Composed on Christmas Day, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” has become the country’s official march (US Code, Title 36 Chapter 10). Sousa wrote lyrics to the song, but they are little known today (sample: “Let martial note in triumph float / And liberty extend its mighty hand / A flag appears ‘mid thunderous cheers, / The banner of the Western land.)”

“Yankee Doodle Boy,” George M. Cohan, 1904.
“You’re A Grand Old Flag,” George M. Cohan, 1906.
“Over There,” George M. Cohan, 1917.
Known as “the man who owned Broadway,” Cohan was a superstar before the term was coined. While his film biography is called “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” the title of his first big tribute to America is actually “The Yankee Doodle Boy.” Cohan excited U.S. audiences again in 1906 with “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” although the original line was “You’re a Grand Old Rag.” It was America’s entrance into World War I in 1917 that inspired Cohan to write “Over There,” for which he received a congressional medal.

“God Bless America,” Irving Berlin, 1938.
The prolific Berlin (900+ songs despite being unable to read music) originally wrote this song right after the first World War, but did not complete it until just before World War II. Kate Smith first performed it during her radio show on Armistice Day, 1938. An immediate sensation, the song was often suggested to replace the “Star Spangled Banner” as the national anthem.

“Star Spangled Banner,” Jimi Hendrix, 1969.
The legendary guitarist took the stage near dawn on the final day of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The 13th song in his hour-long set was an incendiary rendition of the venerable tune. In a performance that was somehow savage and grand at the same time, Hendrix wrestled new levels of emotion from the song and generations have never heard it quite the same way again.

“Apocalypse Now,” Francis Ford Coppola, 1979.
The music in question is “Ride of the Valkyries,” from Richard Wagner’s opera, “Die Walkure” (1854-56). The composition fit perfectly into director Coppola’s nightmarish vision of the Vietnam War. The sequence, featuring a helicopter attack at dawn, never fails to raise the emotions of viewers.

Deported Russian Spy Strips On Cover Of Maxim Magazine

Lawrence Mijares – AHN News Contributor

Moscow, Russian Federation (AHN) – Deported Russian sleeper agent Anna Chapman has posed for the November cover of the Russian edition of popular men’s magazine, Maxim, wearing black lingerie, suspenders, wielding a gun and striking a provocative James Bond-like pose.

Ten Russian sleeper agents, including Chapman, were arrested and deported in July by the U.S. in a spy swap of four Americans held in Russia.

Chapman mysteriously resurfaced early this month with a racy photo shoot in a Russian magazine followed by her appearance at the Baikonur cosmodrone to witness U.S. and Russian astronauts blast off into space.

After returning to Russia, all the deported spies were given top honors by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Only Chapman made a high profile public appearance as a celebrity, the latest of which is the cover of Maxim.

The online website of the Russian edition of the magazine declared that, “No, you are not dreaming and your eyes do not deceive you. The red haired spy has not only stripped off for Maxim but has taken her vow of silence, talking about men, flirting and plans for life.” The publication added that, “Anna Chapman has done more to excite Russian patriotism than the Russian soccer team.”

The November issue of Maxim included the sexy 28-year old Chapman on its list of Russia’s 100 sexiest women and will feature her first interview since her exposure.

Ottawa Initiates Own Oil Sands Probe

AHN News Staff

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – Canadian Environment Minister Jim Prentice announced on Thursday the creation of a six-member panel to review Alberta’s controversial oil sands projects. The review was prompted by rising number of complaints against the tar sands due to its negative impact on the environment, particularly water pollution which had led to deformed fish catch from the Athabasca River.

Prentice said the panel will be made up of a chairwoman and five members who are independent and respective academicians. The panel will finish the review in two months. Prentice did not yet name the members of the panel.

With the announcement, Prentice rejected a proposal by Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner to set up a joint investigation. Renner admitted he was surprised by Prentice’s announcement.

While Renner stressed Alberta has lead jurisdiction, Prentice insisted water management is a federal responsibility. Renner acknowledged that Ottawa’s review will lead to future revisions on the province’s way of monitoring water quality. Renner created Alberta’s own investigating team because of differences between the findings by environmental groups and the province’s study on the impact of the tar sands on water quality.

While the oil sands projects have boosted the financial stock of Alberta, pro-environment groups are questioning the long-term effect of the venture on the province. Aborigine groups have lately joined the growing voice against the oil sands by lobbying in Washington to stop a planned expansion of an oil pipeline to transport oil from Alberta to the U.S.

This week, Canadian-born director James Cameron – who megged the Hollywood blockbuster “Avatar” – inspected the oil sands and joined the voices against the venture. However, while Cameron’s high-profile visit was covered extensively by Canadian press, reports said American and British media generally ignored the event.

YouTube postings of the Cameron visit had less than 40 views each, while the remaining U.S. coverage of the event was mainly done through blogs. A green blogger from Los Angeles theorized the cold shoulder given to the Cameron story may have been due to fatigue over celebrity opinion of environmental issues.

Australian “Smokes” Koran, Bible

AHN News Staff

Sydney, Australia (AHN) – Just days after Florida-based pastor Terry Jones threatened to burn Islam’s holy book to mark the 9/11 attacks, an Australian lawyer posted a 12-minute clip on a video-sharing site showing himself tearing pages out of Christian and Muslim holy books and smoking them.

The video was reportedly posted on the weekend while the U.S. was observing the ninth anniversary of the attacks.

The video on YouTube entitled “Bible or Koran – which burns best?” shows Alex Stewart, an atheist, tearing and lighting up the rolled up pages of the Bible and the Koran. YouTube has since deleted the video.

The incident sparked international outrage, forcing Queensland University of Technology to consider sacking Stewart, who is the university’s commercial contract lawyer. “The Queensland University is obviously extremely, extremely unhappy and disappointed that this sort of incident should occur,” Vice Chancellor Peter Coaldrake told reporters.

Islamic Association of Australia’s President Sheik Muhammad Wahid said that Stewart’s comments had deeply hurt Muslim sentiments as he described the two holy books as being similar to secular books. Wahid added that there was no need to do such an act because it only created disunity and disharmony among people living in Australia.

Referring to Jones’ plan to cancel the burning of Korans, Stewart, in his video, said, “With respect to books like the Bible and the Koran, whatever, just get over it.”

Despite Jones’ cancellation, two people died in protests in Afghanistan.

Defending his right to freedom of speech, Stewart told Brisbane’s Courier Mail that the video was only a joke, adding that he was only smoking grass clippings. “People do this stuff all the time and if people get really upset about this then they’re taking it far too seriously,” he added.

In a related development in India, hundreds of furious Muslims, chanting pro-Islamic and anti-U.S. slogans, torched a missionary school in Kashmir region Monday.

There were no reports of injuries in the incident since the Tyndale Biscoe School was already closed due to unrest in the Kashmir Valley.

The protests started after Iran-based Press TV broadcast a clip showing a small group of Christian protesters tearing Koran pages outside the White House on Saturday.

The Kashmiri protestors defied curfew and held nightlong demonstrations and road blockages in Budgam and Baramulla.

Leading Shiite cleric Aga Syed Hassan from Budgam denounced the tearing of the Korans and demanded punishment for the perpetrators. He vowed to continue protests.
