Plane with TV crew crashes off Robinson Crusoe island

Santiago, Chile (AHN) – A Chilean air force plane carrying a crew from the national television station crashed in the Pacific Ocean on late Friday, all 21 people aboard are believed dead.

Four bodies, including a journalist and a producer from the Television Nacional de Chile (TVN), and debris from the turboprop plane were recovered Saturday in the waters around Robinson Crusoe island in the Juan Fernandez islands, 435 miles off the Chilean coast, according to Defense Minister Andres Allamand.

Popular Chilean television host Felipe Camiroaga is also feared killed in the crash. The host was among the TVN crew flying to the Juan Fernandez islands to cover the inauguration of reconstruction projects for the victims of an earthquake and tsunami in February 2010.

Also aboard the plane were eight members of the air force, two other TVN crews, six staffers of a humanitarian organization ad two officials from the culture ministry.

The plane lost radio contact while trying to land for the second time in Juan Fernandez islands amid strong winds.

The Chilean navy, air force and fishermen were taking part in the search for survivors.

NYC weatherwoman arrested, placed on suspension for filing false rape report

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – WABC-TV weather woman Heidi Jones was arrested after she allegedly lied about nearly being raped. Jones has been charged with filing a false police report in connection with a tale of a Central Park stalker.

In November, Jones, an avid runner, told police that a Hispanic man tried to rape her a month earlier as she jogged in Central Park. She also said he harassed her outside her apartment claiming he knew she spoke to police.

According to sources in published reports after investigating her story and questioning the 37-year-old broadcaster her story began to fall apart. Investigators believed she wanted to be as vague as possible in order to make their job difficult and so they wouldn’t have witnesses to question.

She is reported to have finally admitted to making up the false allegations.

The New York Post says that Jones admitted that she made up the story “in a plea for sympathy to counter some unknown setback that she was experiencing in her personal life.”

During her station’s noon telecast it was announced she would be placed on an indefinite suspension. It’s believed that Jones, who joined the station in 2005 will be fired after an internal investigation.

If convicted of the Class A misdemeanor of filing a false report, Jones could face up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.
