Kara DioGuardi talks being head judge on Bravo’s “Platinum Hit”

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Entertainment) – Bravo was the first to put the spotlight on “Project Runway” and has made us tune in for every cut on “Top Chef.” Now, the network really sings as it puts together 12 up-and-coming songwriters looking to score the next “Platinum Hit.”

Super-illustrious songwriter Kara DioGuardi, best known for her two-season stint as judge on “American Idol” and less known as the lyricist behind major hits by Carrie Underwood, Christina Aguilera and Carrie Underwood, is getting back in the judge’s seat, this time sans Simon and Randy.

DioGuardi, who also released her first book “A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, and American Idol,” aims to give a voice to the songwriters who work tirelessly to write what’s on the radio, often with little to no credit.

“I thought it would be a great way to expose this army of people to the world, the songwriter, and show people how difficult it is and that not all the artists write their songs,” Kara DioGuardi told CNS. “And even when they do write their songs, there’s usually someone else on there too.

She’ll be joined by singer/songwriter Jewel, behind hits like “Who Will Save Your Soul” and “Foolish Games,” who has had all 7 of her studio albums hit the top 10. Playing both host and judge, Jewel showed off a bit of her teeth as a guest judge during the auditions for “American Idol” one year.

“She’s sweet, she’s smart, and she’s intelligent and we have a really good vibe together,” said DioGuardi. “I had a blast with her.”

But how does a songwriting competition turn up the heat to make the series a must-watch? Remember, this show’s on Bravo, the same network which made us tune in week after week for a hair cutting competition in “Shear Genius” and art-making on “Work of Art.”

DioGuardi says that the challenges you’ll see on “Platinum Hit” are all very real challenges faced by songwriters in the business, including working with teams that just aren’t working.

“You’re going to see a lot of true-to-life challenges. Sometimes you’ll have to write a song in two hours with an artist you’ve never met,” she says. “On other challenges, they’ve got 30 minutes to write a hook.”

With its first hour premiering Monday night, “Platinum Hit” looks like it should be hitting all the right notes. The show airs Mondays on Bravo at 10/9C.
