Beach Boys are back with 50th anniversary tour, album

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Good vibrations are reverberating across the globe after surf rock group The Beach Boys announced a 50th anniversary tour and new album.

Brian Wilson, revered by many as one of the most talented songwriters in pop history, is putting his differences and grudges aside and join Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks for a new album and a 50-date tour.

Wilson had denied rumors of a reunion, saying that he “didn’t really like working with the guys.” But in a change of heart, he decided that perhaps he really didn’t dislike working with them that much. He nows says of the tour and album: “This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again.”

The tour will kick off on April 27 in New Orleans.

The Beach Boys began in Hawthorne, CA, in 1961. They became known for iconic hits that conjure up images of a carefree Southern California beach lifestyle, complete with convertibles and romance.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, the Beach Boys hold the title for America’s top selling band, and they also hold the record for the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits, with 36 songs.

Roy Orbison’s widow dies at 60

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – The widow of rock n’ roll pioneer Roy Orbison, Barbara Orbison, died Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 60.

Family spokesperson Sarah McMullen said Barbara Orbison died at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center where she had been hospitalized since May.

Roy Orbison died in 1988. Barbara was his manager and co-produced a four-box CD of her husband’s 107 recordings after his death titled “Roy Orbison: The Soul of Rock and Roll.”

Barbara Orbison’s Nashville-based publishing company, Still Working Music, was recently awarded BMI’s 2010 Song of the Year for Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me.”

Last year, Mrs. Orbison accepted a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on her husband’s behalf.

Rare rock concert held in Afghanistan

Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) – Afghan youth were treated to a rare rock concert in Kabul over the weekend. The concert, dubbed Sound Central, was held at a small enclosed park and featured local musicians and bands from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Australia.

Australian photojournalist Travis Beard organized the concert that featured 10 bands and drew at least 450 people, including women. A few Afghan security men were also seen guarding the event.

Organizers and performers defied the security risk posed by Taliban insurgents by not revealing the venue until the last minute.

There have been virtually no public musical performances in Afghanistan since the country was engulfed in wars in the 1970s. The hardline Taliban regime banned non-Islamic music in the 1990s.

A CBS News crew covered the concert and even interviewed a local band called District Unknown.

The three members of District Unknown performed without wearing masks, which they did before to protect themselves from reprisal by Taliban insurgents. In the interview with CBS News, they said they revealed their identities in the name of freedom of expression.

The band’s drummer, Nasram, was quoted as saying, “If we are not talking about who we are and if we are not expressing ourselves, we are dead.”

Organizers and performers respected local tradition by not serving alcohol and going silent when mosques called for afternoon prayers.

The concert went without incident.

Madonna, Britney Spears to be featured in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Exhibit

“Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” will take visitors through an interactive journey highlighting the firsts, the bests, and most memorable moments of the females who have played important roles in rock and roll.

More than 60 pop culture icons and artists will be spotlighted during the exhibit, including Chrissie Hynde, Bikini Kill, Wanda Jackson, and more.

The exhibit, which will fill two floors of the museum, will feature video, listening stations, artifacts, and more. A recording booth will be feature, where visitors can record or film their own moments inspired by women in rock.

Through the eras and leading up to the present day, the exhibit even takes a closer look at some of the female pop princesses who not only used their talent but their sexuality to become some of the most talked-about performers in history in a portion of the exhibit called “Causing a Commotion: Madonna and the Pop Explosion.”

“Causing a Commotion” explores the controversial female artists who pushed the boundaries of what’s expected of female pop singers, including Britney Spears, Cyndi Lauper, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani.

The “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” exhibit begins at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland on May 13th.

Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow, Guy Fiere Rock Gaylord Opryland’s Reopening

Nashville, TN, United States (AHN) – The party continues in Nashville where the Gaylord Opryland Resort has returned after months of repair and renovation. Celebrations lasting all weekend continue as the Music City welcomes the grand reopening of one of its signature destinations.

Gaylord has been working non-stop to reopen the resort, which was only closed for an astonishing 195 days. Using an overwhelmingly local workforce (95% of subcontractors came from the Volunteer State), an average of 500 to 800 people were working each day to install a total of 21,400 sheets of drywall, 2,200 doors, and around 45,000 sq. ft. of tile, marble, granite and decorative glass.

“It’s still difficult to describe the emotions I felt at sunrise on May 3rd, when the first light revealed the water completely surrounding and breaching this magnificent hotel,” Gaylord Entertainment CEO Colin Reed explained during the grand reopening ceremony. “But despite the devastation we witnessed, I never had any doubt that our company, with the support of our [employees] and our community, would prove ourselves to be equal to this challenge.”

“The road to recovery certainly hasn’t been an easy one, but we’re proud to be here today celebrating what is not only a special day for the Gaylord brand, but also the city of Nashville,” Reed added.

Grammy Award-winning Country music star Keith Urban kicked off an emotional grand reopening ceremony on Friday night. Urban, who lives in Nashville with his wife, actress Nicole Kidman, played an emotional set for invited guests, many of which worked for companies involved in the reconstruction. Even Guy Fieri got emotional during his lunch and cooking demonstration on Saturday. Fieri, host of the Food Network’s ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,’ admitted that he endured a red-eye flight from California in order to be a part of what he called the “historic” return of the Gaylord Opryland Resort.

Saturday night, Grammy Award-winning Country music star Sheryl Crow performed several of her hit songs during an exclusive concert. Crow, who lives on an 154-acre ranch near Nashville, only lost a small bridge in the May flood – but says the list of those who lost everything is endless. But just like thousands of other tourists, Crow is one of the stars glad to see the hotel’s return. While Crow was entertaining fans in a packed ballroom, her two adopted sons Wyatt Steven and Levi James toured the resort’s ‘ICE!’ attraction after spending a day at the Nashville Zoo.

‘ICE!’ is just one of the attractions the Gaylord Opryland has been reintroducing to the public. Gaylord spent millions to renovate much of the resort, including revamping guest rooms and putting in new restaurants. Guests during the grand reopening weekend filled the new Conservatory Bar, which sits between two new restaurants; the Italian-themed Ravello and the Mexican-themed Solario. Ravello’s menu Twin-sister bartenders (and Nashville-natives) Dana and Tara say the Conservatory Bar’s newly mixed “Lemoncello Collins” has been as popular with guests as it is strong.

The rebirth of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel comes pointedly at the start of the holiday/Christmas season. The hotel pushed hard to reopen in time to continue their annual ‘Country Christmas’ attraction. Each year, the Gaylord Opryland hangs over 2 million lights across the resort, lighting up 461 trees, 500 shrubs and hanging 15 miles of green garland and 10 miles of red ribbons. There’s a 40 ft. indoor Christmas tree and a 141-foot-tall ‘Southern Lights’ outdoor tree with more than 38,000 lights.

‘The Radio City Christmas Spectacular’ with the Rockettes is also making its return to the restored Grand Ole Opry House. The show brings Santa Claus and a cast and crew of more than 100 members, including the high-kicking Rockettes and live animals for the ‘Living Nativity.’ After the show, families have been lining up to walk-through ‘ICE!’ which pays tribute to the film ‘Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’ as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The attraction boasts 2 million lbs of hand-carved ice and is kept at a bone-chilling 9 degrees. Guests walk-through scenes from the movie and can enjoy a slide made entirely of ice.

Beyond fun and games, the Opryland Resort and Convention Center and the Grand Old Opry is one of Nashville’s economic cornerstones. Each year millions of locals, visitors and conventioneers visit the Gaylord Opryland Resort, which is the largest non-casino hotel in the United States. The Gaylord Opryland is also a major part of Nashville’s transition from a historic Country music town to an international convention destination that can handle serious business.

This week, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean announced that after fierce competition, the National Rifle Association (NRA) decided to bring its 144th annual convention to the Music City. The three-day convention will bring an estimated 50,000 guests and $25 million to Nashville.

“We’re coming out of a difficult economy and the flood and now there’s pent-up demand for the hospitality industry,” Loews Vanderbilt Hotel General Manager Tom Negri told the Tennessean newspaper. “Having that large of a group means so much for the city. And association business like this tends to follow one another.”

The Tradition of Great Chicago Live Music Continues With Gooey

Chicago Illinois has long been a music epicenter. In the early 1900′s, plantation workers migrated from the south bringing with them jazz and the blues, which lead to the birth of the Chicago blues and Chicago style Jazz. Chicago became very famous for the Blues however the Chicago music scene is not just limited to the Blues. Chicago is full of every kind of music from Symphony to punk rock and everything in between. During the 1960′s and 1970′s folk music became a focal point from a number of prominent folk singer-songwriters like John Prine and Steve Goodman. The Chicago music scene is also famous for the Chicago house, a style of house music, which led to the birth of the techno style of music. In the 1980′s and 1990′s rock music, especially heavy, punk rock and alternative music were strong in Chicago when bands like The Smashing Pumpkins got their big start. And more recently more hip hop artists like Kanye West are emerging from the Chicago music scene. Despite the different varieties of music, these artists all have one thing in common – they all got their start in Chicago.
