MySpace and its ilk act as a one-stop band advert where one can upload anything desired: photos, songs, video, text and more. One should limit himself to two or three social networks though – he doesn’t want to spread himself too thinly. As good as MySpace and its mates are, having their own website too looks more professional. Websites are cheap to host and easy to build so there are no excuses. It should be remembered to be updated it as often as the social network profile though. It should be ensured that regular updates and news stories are posted. New photos are added frequently and generally the profile should be kept looking busy. That way one will be seen as a serious, enthusiastic, up-and-coming act. Regular profile/website updates will also keep things interesting for returning fans. An artist biog should be concise, informative and interesting. People don’t want to know that the band was formed “in the first year of university by songwriter Joe Bloggs and producer John Smith” – cut out the background and write something that’s a bit different. Top-notch imagery is crucial if desiring to be noticed online. One must try to present a uniform ‘look’ that fits with the music.

There are plenty of aspiring photographers about who will be willing to take press or live photos and/ or the band for little or no money. They should be taken advantage of. If being an independent act, the goal should be to get the music heard as much as possible. One should be aware that people are much more inclined to listen if he offers the occasional track for free. If it is decided not to give away the music then at least the streaming full-length versions of your tracks should be offered rather than short clips. Networking with other artists and bands by keeping in regular contact and giving feedback on their music means one is likely to find gig partners and be asked to play support slots. Musicians are also generally more interested as fans when it comes to independent music. Replying to mails and friend requests can sometimes be a chore but one must try to avoid blanket “thanks for the add” messages. If things are kept personal one is far more likely to be remembered and if the audience likes him, they’ll be predisposed to like his music.

While it’s important to keep in touch with fans, repeated spam is annoying, so it is pretty important to reserve mass messaging for special events. It’s far more effective to tailor the messages and gig invites to individuals or small groups of people – there’s no point telling someone from Land’s End that one’s gigging in Dundee. It can be tempting to add every person coming across, but when it comes to MySpace, high profile views is what makes everyone look good and not the friend count. It should be ensured to add only valuable friends who will like the music and visit the profile. The sad truth is that the quality of the music won’t always be enough to get one noticed. One must try doing a blog, a quiz, a gimmick – anything that will make his website or profile a bit different and interesting.

The ease of downloading music and file-sharing has caused the industry to adjust in ways few could have imagined not long ago.

At first, the music industry was hit hard by the first file-sharing programs that allowed fans to download music without actually paying for it. The rapid downloading speeds afforded by high-speed internet and satellite broadband have made this process even easier in recent years. Although CD sales fell and some artists initially feared they would no longer be able to support themselves by making music, legal safeguards have since been put into place to prevent illegal music sharing (although of course the practice is still widespread). Despite these initial setbacks, the industry has adapted and has arguably provided the general public with infinitely more opportunities to discover and enjoy music than were available previously.

For example, websites like Pandora allow users to discover new music every day. Listeners can create personalized internet radio stations that play only certain types of songs, according to the user’s specifications. Music fans can create a station based on a song or band that they like, and the station will play songs with similar musical qualities. The website is completely legal and all music artists are paid when a user listens to their music. The service may not work properly on computers with slow internet connections, however, and satellite internet or another type of strong connection is recommended.

Fans who do not want to purchase a song online also have the option of listening to their favorite tunes using services such as YouTube. Searching the name of a popular song on YouTube inevitably produces hundreds of results-from official music videos to the home videos of talented and not-so-talented fans who have posted their own renditions online for all to see.

Of course, now there are also many ways to purchase music online. The most popular program for downloading music is probably iTunes. The iTunes Store allows fans to search and download both individual songs and entire albums, and that is just the beginning. Television shows, movies, podcasts–if you have a fast satellite internet connection, you will have access to any of these literally within seconds. You can view the most popular downloads of the week as well, which might allow you to discover new music; you can preview each song for approximately 30 seconds.

Musicians have also taken advantage of social networking sites such as MySpace to reach a wider audience of potential fans. Most singers and bands have a page on the website; this allows users to listen to songs and find information about upcoming events such as concerts.

The internet has created countless new ways for individuals to find and enjoy music. Although illegal downloading initially worried many in the music industry and continues via a number of websites, on balance the internet appears to have been a positive thing for both musicians and fans. The introduction of high-speed internet and satellite broadband have been especially great for music fans–high downloading speeds mean instant access to their favorite new songs. Many people still listen to the radio on the way to work or buy their parents CDs for the holidays, but these traditional means of discovering music are being quickly replaced by the countless new music options afforded by the internet.

No longer can the lack of radio support or obtaining a record deal be the scapegoat for a band or individual artist’s not being able to gain national attention. The playing field from what it used to be 10, and definitely 20 years ago is now basically on even level. Sure, there are many who have more of the advantages, but due to the leveling of the playing field, the same things can be achieved by anyone, with a little more grinding… and a lot more paying attention and making use of the advantages you now have playing in your favor.

Hip-Hop artists are doing it themselves. Authors are publishing their own books. Anyone with a quality HD camera and the hunger for cinema can make a film. And you know what? Because of the internet, there is no longer a middle man needed distribution reaches to your audience.

So now what’s your excuse?

With the advent of today’s internet marketing techniques through social media, you are now able to showcase your live shows via video platforms such as YouTube or Film Rookie. You are not able to not only allow your music to be heard, but to be instantly purchased via MP3 and Ringtone downloads. You are now able to nationally brand yourselves, spit shine your images and tell your stories via social website such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg and MySpace. In fact, you are now able to completely build your platform in the most effective way having to go through hearing some type of gatekeeper try and tell you that your work isn’t marketable and won’t sell. Yes… thanks to today’s media technologies, you will never have to deal with that person again. Now how you decide to portray that image and produce that music is solely up to you. But never again can you put the blame on any outside sources.

In the classic Chuck Grown go-go song, “Bustin Loose”, Chuck begins with the demanding phrase, “Keep what you’ve got until you get what you need.” Well… for the past 30 years, you’ve given a lot. But now I’m here to tell you that just what you have needed is now here.

In this, my friends, are the areas that TMOTTGoGo.com will strictly be focusing on. The production. The image building. The promoting. The marketing. And everything else that entails please your current audience and building some new ones. Talkin ’bout making moves. This surpasses going just beyond the beltway by 2650 miles. (that’s DC to LA by the way).

In the words of the Legendary James Funk, “Now, how you gonna carry it?”

Kato Hammond is an American musician and journalist. He is the owner and creator of Take Me Out To The Go-Go, Inc.
