Vietnam War-era “Pentagon papers” officially declassified

College Park, MD, United States (AHN) – The National Archives and Records Administration on Monday officially declassified the Pentagon Papers detailing the history of the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, exactly 40 years after it was first published by the New York Times.

The Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon Presidential Libraries also opened for public viewing on Monday the full version of the paper originally entitled “United States-Vietnam Relations 1945-1967: A Study Prepared by the Department of Defense” and labeled “Report of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Vietnam Task Force.”

The Pentagon Papers was produced by the Vietnam Study Task Force secretly created by former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on June 17, 1967. McNamara’s reason for making the report was unclear.

The 7,000-page report was based on historical analysis and existing files in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. When completed on Jan. 15, 1969, the report was classified as “Top Secret – Sensitive” and only 15 copies were printed.

Daniel Ellsberg, an aide of former assistant secretary of defense John T. McNaughton and a member of the task force, photocopied the report in October 1969 and leaked it to the press. His intention was to expose the lies of the governemnt about the war and stop the U.S. war with Vietnam, which he was opposed to.

The New York Times was the first to publish the incomplete and redacted version of the report on June 13, 1971. But two days later, the government obtained a court order to stop its publication on grounds of national security concerns.

The U. S. Supreme Court overturned the ruling on June 30 citing the media’s constitutional right to press freedom.

Among the controversial contents of the Pentagon Papers was the U.S. government’s deliberate expansion of the war with the bombing of Cambodia and Laos, the plot of the Kennedy administration to overthrow South Vietnamese leader Ngo Dinh Diem and President Johnson’s 1964 presidential campaign promise of not widening the war but deciding otherwise during his term.

Adele Cancels Tour Because of Illness

LA, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) – Thousands of people are sure to be disappointed that Adele’s last nine shows of her tour have been canceled-and the singer is one of them. Adele has just learned that her laryngitis is more severe than she first thought and requires her to completely rest her voice.

The singer had postponed five shows after she was originially diagnosed with laryngitis; however, an Otolaryngolgy specialist told the singer that she won’t be singing for awhile.

Adele was hopeful that she would begin performing again on June 4 in San Francisco, but is now following doctor’s orders.

She has responded to her condition by saying “I’m really frustrated. I was hoping with a week’s rest I’d be better to sing again straight away.” The singer added, “However, there is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctor’s advice and rest some more. I’m so sorry. See you soon, love Adele.”

Information about a new schedule for the tour dates is not yet available.

Adele forced to cancel North American tour due to illness

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) – After announcing that she’d simply postponed a few dates on her North American tour, Adele has been forced to cancel the rest of her trek due to illness.

Diagnosed with laryngitis, Adele postponed 5 shows and was planning to resume the rest of her tour on June 4th. But doctor’s orders are for the 23-year-old British songstress to rest for another few weeks, including total voice rest.

“I’m really frustrated. I was hoping with a weeks rest I’d be better to sing again straight away. However there is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctors advice and rest some more,” said Adele in a statement. “I’m so sorry. See you soon, love Adele”

Adele had 10 more dates to perform, including stops in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Nashville, and Dallas. Plans to reschedule the dates have yet to be announced.

Adele kicks off another leg of her European tour in support of her latest album, “21,” in September. “Rolling in the Deep” continues as the #1 song in the U.S. for another week.

John Galliano to stand trial for public insults in June

Paris, France (AHN Entertainment) – Disgraced Dior designer John Galliano is set to stand trial for verbally insulting people with racist and anti-Semitic outbursts on June 22. A Paris court said the criminal trial will last a day.

Galliano, who led Christian Dior label’s designs from 1996 until his dismissal in March, is accused of making anti-Semitic and racist remarks against three people on two separate occasions, the first occurring in October 2010 and the latest in February.

A video of a drunk Galliano proclaiming his love for Adolf Hitler surfaced online.

He faces up to six months in jail and a 22,500 euro (US$31,000) fine, the maximum punishment for race, religion or ethnicity-based insults, if he is found guilty.

Meanwhile, there’s another legal drama for the fallen fashion bigwig. Galliano is also being sued by his former lawyer for defamation and slander.

He fired and accused lawyer Stephane Zerbib of embezzling around $4.3 million from his account. Zerbib countersued with two charges, saying Galliano smeared him with the allegations.

Pearl Jam to Headline Hard Rock Calling @ Hyde Park

The Seattle rockers, fresh from their tours of North America, Australia and New Zealand promoting their new release Backspacer, are the first confirmed act

of the three day festival which returns to London’s Hyde Park between 25-27 June.

Pearl Jam are to play the annual Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park next summer. The band, who are currently touring their ‘Backspacer’ album, will perform on the opening Friday night of the London event on June 25 2010.

Fans of classic rock are set to be served well next summer when a clutch of heritage bands descend on London for a series of high profile, outdoor live

dates. The Seattle band will play the first night of the three-day event on Friday June 25. The event takes place over the same weekend as Glastonbury

Festival, so gives the Glastonbury-disappointed ,and there are many, a chance to get their festival hit.

Last year’s Hard Rock Calling was headlined by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, Neil Young and The Killers. The event takes place in London’s Hyde

Park over three days, June 25 to 27, with more names to be announced imminently.
