Maria Shriver offered record-breaking advance for tell-all memoir

Anthony Jones – Celebrity News Service Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) – Although Maria Shriver is seeking spousal support from Arnold in her recent divorce filing, she may not need it. She’s being offered millions to write a tell-all memoir.

Book publishers are betting that Shriver’s story could be the hottest-selling book in town and are willing to fork over a record-breaking advance.

According to Radar Online, a tell-all from Shriver could be the biggest book deal ever, more than the record $15 million Bill Clinton earned to write his memoir, “My Life.”

News of the offer comes just as Shriver officially filed for divorce Friday from Arnold Schwarzenegger, two months after the former California governor admitted he fathered a child with their housekeeper.

For legal reasons, the book would likely not hit shelves until the divorce is finalized, while Radar reports it might even take as long as 2015 if she decided to wait until her youngest son Christopher turns 18.

Shriver is already an accomplished author, having written the best-seller “And One More Thing Before You Go…” and the inspirational “Just Who Will You Be?”

Hilary Duff Says Playing Mean Girl Is Fun On NBC’s “Community”

Anthony Jones – AHN Entertainment Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Hilary Duff is only 23-years-old and she’s starred in over a dozen movies, recorded multi-platinum albums, has her own fragrance, and is now a New York Times best-seller with the release of her first book “Elixir.” This week, she returns to where she started it at all, with a guest spot on the comedy “Community.”

Duff started on television at 13 playing the sweet, good-natured “Lizzie McGuire.” Now at 23, she’s spewing lines like “You look like a lizard whose mom got raped by a Muppet” on NBC’s “Community.” Hilary guest stars as Meghan, the queen bee of a group of community college mean girls who get into it with Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Annie (Alison Brie), and the biggest mean girl of all, Abed (Danny Pudi).

The insults start flying and Duff, who was the titular character in “A Cinderella Story” while Lindsay Lohan was off doing “Mean Girls,” gets to try her hand at being the b-word for once. And according to Mrs. Mike Comrie, it’s a lot of fun.

On that Muppet rape line:

HD: In most of the other the scenes that I have with Danny, he’s giving it back to me. But in this one, he kind-of turns into a robot and his robot shuts down and he decides not to be mean anymore. So I’m throwing these insults at him and he has the saddest look on his face. And it made me feel really bad when I was doing it because I say, “Oh you look like a lizard whose mom got raped by a Muppet.” I call him out in front of the whole cafeteria and it made me feel bad but I would laugh. It was fun. I’ve never done anything where I get to be a bitch before so it was exciting.

On returning to television sitcom territory:

HD: I started doing comedy with “Lizzie McGuire,” which was a lot of physical comedy and I do miss that. If the right project came along with a great character, I would love to do that. It’s where I started and I miss it. I also like to find balance and challenge myself with dramatic things and I’m just waiting to get that real dramatic part.

On new music:

HD: I wouldn’t say that it’s something that’s going to happen in a year but I do miss singing and I miss being on stage. I’ve had such a busy last two years. I got married, I wrote a book, I’ve been traveling a lot back and forth to see my husband. It’s not something that was on my priority list but I just did a book tour and I think almost every fan that showed up for the signing was like, “When are you doing new music? When is more music coming out?” So it did inspire me and make me feel like people are missing it so I feel inspired again.

On her first book “Elixir”:

HD: I just became a New York Times best seller, so that was really exciting. I’m starting to write the sequel because it’s a series and that’s really exciting for me, just thinking about the direction of the new book and creating some new characters.

On playing her main character Clea in a movie version of “Elixir”:

HD: You think? You don’t think I’m too old?

NBC’s “Community” airs Thursday nights at 8pm ET/PT on NBC.

Stand Back Spiderman, Rabbi Meir Kahane Debuts as Comic Book Hero

The Media Line Staff

Tel Aviv, Israel (TML) – Israeli children who don’t find enough inspiration from the exploits of Spiderman can now turn to Rabbi Meir Kahane, who founded and led the Jewish Defense League and Kach movements before his assassination in 1990 and now stars as the hero of his own comic book.

“Miracle Man,” a 50-page book printed on glossy paper and hardbound, making it more like a graphic novel than a traditional comic, tells the life story of the rabbi in a format designed for older children. The story is told through a school project young Meir David, is assigned to write about a rabbi. He meets with various people— fictional friends and relatives as well as real-life figures like the Kahane acolyte Baruch Marzel — who knew Kahane personally or were helped by him.

“The idea is to teach the younger generation about Rabbi Kahane. It’s for those who never had the chance to meet him,” Levi Chaden, English director of the Yeshiva of the Jewish Idea, Miracle man’s publisher, told The Media Line. “Everyone loves comics. It’s an easy and fun way to understand his ideas, for kids and adults.”

Kahane’s Kach Party captured one Knesset seat in the 1984 elections before it was banned as a racist and its successor movement Kahane Chai (Kahane Lives) plays a marginal role in Israeli politics today. Nevertheless, his supporters remained determined to spread his philosophy of violence and hostility to Arabs. Some elements of his philosophy have entered mainstream political discourse.

At least one member of Israel’s Knesset, Michael Ben-Ari of the National Union Party, openly identifies as a Kahane supporter and recent initiatives by the government to require a loyalty oath of new citizens reflect a new assertiveness about Israel’s Jewish identity. An event commemorating the 20th anniversary of Kahane’s assassination at Jerusalem’s Ramada Renaissance Hotel drew 500 people. But the first week of sales for Miracle Man amounted to just 100 copies.

“There has been a process of legitimating of the extreme right in Israel,” Gideon Rahat, senior lecturer in the department of political science at The Hebrew University, told The Media Line. “Once you have a member of the Knesset who says that the he identifies with Kahane, these ideas become more identified with everyday politics.”

However, Rahat warned against reading too far into the impact of Ben-Ari and other extremists. Democracies in Europe and elsewhere elect lawmakers from the political fringe, but their ability to influence policy and public opinion is usually very limited.

Kahane was an American-born rabbi who began his career in Brooklyn by forming the Jewish Defense League in 1968 with the aim of protecting Jews against street violence at a time when New York City was experiencing rising level of crime. He turned his sights to the plight of Russian Jewry in the late 1960s with a campaign of harassing visiting Russian diplomats and artists.

He immigrated to Israel in 1971 where his Kach movement openly advocated the expulsion of all Arabs from Israel. He became a member of the Knesset in 1984, but his party was banned from the 1988 elections. After Kahane’s death in 1990, Kahane Chai splintered off from Kach, although it was also barred from politics for being racist.

“Even though it’s been 20 years since his assassination, his ideas are still alive and kicking in Israeli society today,” Chaden contended.

The comic, written by Na’ama Neiman and illustrated by Dikla Sagiv, and four months in the making, is published by the Yeshiva of the Jewish Idea.

Can a comic book reach out to children and influence their view of the world?

Dorit Maya-Gur, an Israeli comic artist that created the hit “Falafel Man” series as well as comics aimed at teaching schoolchildren about the holocaust, said comics can be an effective means of educating kids, but she draws a line at politics.

“If you want the kids, you need to do it in the comic book store,” she said in an interview with The Media Line. “When you get politics in there it changes things, because you are dealing with kids. There is a fine line between education and brainwashing,.”
