SXSW 2011

The SXSW Music and Media Conference is now officially as old as the perfect bottle of Chivas Regal (that’s right the big 2 – 5)! And, like every other 25 year old, SXSW is already gearing up for a great party. If you weren’t invited this is definitely the one to crash.

Like a considerable chunk of the population you might be thinking, what is S.X.S.W.? Some kind of leather and bondage convention? No, no, nothing that kinky (usually). SXSW (South by Southwest) is a series of conferences, concerts and festivals where eclectic music, independent film and new technologies converge over the course of over a week (March 11-20 2011) in sunny Austin, Texas. It is THE place to be on the cutting edge of…everything.

SXSW Music (March 16-20): Hundreds, literally hundreds, of artists in over 80 venues all over and around Austin, Texas. Some past South by Southwest bands include R.E.M., Lou Reed, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Public Enemy, Ingrid Michaelson, Fleet Foxes, Ghostface, Smokey Robinson, Cheap Trick, MGMT, the Dixie Chicks and Vampire Weekend. There is no way you won’t find something you like. To see this last year’s South by Southwest 2010 lineup. South by Southwest 2010 music featured some of the most unique and up and coming artists around and South by Southwest 2011 will be no exception.

SXSW Film (March 11-19): More than 250 films playing in 6 venues. Comedies, indies, and documentaries by all kinds of filmmakers. All debuted at past SXSW festivals and conferences. Whether you are a business or tech enthusiast SXSW has what’s coming next for you.

Most of the action centers around the Austin Convention Center where attendees can get their badges and participate in many of the talks, conferences trade shows and panels. The off-premises events such as music performances and film screenings are almost all within walking distance.

Now, obviously, SXSW is a big event and it is, of course, not easy to find close by places to stay. MetroFlats still has rooms available at it’s vacation rentals in Austin. It’s a super-convenient way to get amazing rooms for big groups at low prices.
Another way to stay under budget is to get your tickets early. The South by South West website has a chart with all the deadlines.

Movies and tech toys by day, great music and one of the biggest cities in Texas by night. Spending a week in the Lone Star State this year is a must.

Siera Cerny Loves Bear Country

For those who are familiar with the band, Bear Country has gone through a lot of changes over the last couple years. From soft-spoken folk to more rowdy classic country inspired songs, this Omaha-based group is constantly in flux, which just one of the reasons I love them.

After a show a few weeks ago in Chicago, I had a quick word with the band and asked about the recent departure of their former lead singer Susan Sanchez. Of course, as gentlemen, they had only positive comments about their former leading lady. They explained it was a decision made by all members and they will continue to tour and make music. Though Sanchez’s soft and powerful crooning was a hallmark of the Bear Country look and sound, there is something to be said for the group’s new all-male composition.

It’s true the remaining five members are easy on the eyes, and with their new album Frozen Lake (Slumber Party Records), their first without Sanchez, they stay true to their homegrown roots and craft a new folk freshness that never goes over the top. The influence of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, and maybe a touch of Radiohead blends into something unexpected, and definitely worthwhile. more

Versus On The Ones And Threes (Merge)

On their first LP in ten years, New York City’s Versus returns with ten tracks imbued with raucous guitar riffs, soft, heart-clenching melodies, and the band’s signature vocal harmonies, courtesy of frontman, Ed Baluyut (guitars) and Fontaine Toups (bass). While a conceptually simple formula, few bands have achieved such a delicate and aesthetically pleasing version. On this refreshing release, the band cuts through years of hipster-churned sludge back to the core of the New York music scene, proving that the art of making music was lost, but not dead.

“Cicada” begins with a stop-start rhythm accented with a ’70s inspired guitar lick and soon cascades into an ethereal soundscape where Balyut and Toups sing, “Seven long years / I’ve been left for dead / I don’t want to dream / Because you still appear.” Given that NYC has a long history with the cicada, one wonders if the song is a metaphor for the band’s decade-long low profile and subsequent resurgence. Other tracks that linger include the Toups-led “Into Blue” and “Gone to Earth,” which employs violin and xylophone to pull that much harder on the heartstrings.

The real standout is “The Ones and Threes,” appropriately held until the end for an explosive send-off. It tells the tale of a frustrated couple and is a prime example of the Versus canon, illustrated by the thrill ride that is one of the band’s catchiest chorus melodies to date.

On the Ones and Threes is a worthy addition to the Versus oeuvre. Whether you’re a longtime fan or have recently fallen under their spell, all hail the cicadas—not the zombies!—of indie rock.
